Peewee Select was
thrilled to be part of the NHL Alumni vs. Law Enforcement game in support of
the Special Olympics. The players began their day with an on-ice clinic led by
4-time Stanley Cup winner Mike Krushelnyski and Stanley Cup winner Bryan Muir.
The clinic included 2-on-1 and 5-on-2 drills. The team focused on breaking out
of their end, transitioning to attack in the offensive zone, entering the
offensive zone with speed, and remembering to spread out wide with one player
attacking the net and another player staying high. We look forward to seeing
these strategies demonstrated throughout our season! The clinic ended with an
exciting shootout competition.
Important messages from Krushelnyski and Muir: If you’re smart in school you’ll be smart in hockey, hockey is about learning - listen to your coaches – they are teaching you the game. Thank you to Mike and Bryan for the time they took with our players and the feedback they gave them. It was an incredible hour on the ice.
The fun did not end there - our team skated on the ice with the alumni for their pre-game introductions and we had one of our biggest crowds yet for a team red vs white scrimmage between periods. The NHL Alumni vs Law Enforcement game was fun to watch – the kids loved cheering on the Alumni and watching the skills competition. Definitely a memorable day at the rink!
Kudos to our Peewee Select families for fundraising throughout November in support of the Special Olympics. The team raised $1000 for a worthy cause through ticket sales and the parent-run pizza table. Thank you to all our friends and family who bought tickets! Huge thanks to the NHL Alumni, Oldtimer Benefit Hockey, Scotiabank, York Regional Police, Town of Newmarket arena staff, Newmarket Minor Hockey Association, the Newmarket Hurricanes, and our phenomenal team of parent volunteers for all their help over the last few weeks in pulling this day together.
