It was a good time to be in Newmarket this weekend with the Rogers Hometown Hockey kicking off their inaugural road trip celebrating minor hockey across the country. It also marked the restart of the Novice AA regular season games after a two week hiatus from competition.
It certainly was a fantastic feeling downtown at the Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket where the Rogers Hometown Hockey road trip had set up camp with plenty of food, games and entertainment for all ages to enjoy. From NHL alumni autograph sessions to great swag from Newmarket Minor Hockey and sponsors, there was fun for everyone to enjoy the foundations of the love for 'Canada's game'.
Ron MacLean and Tara Sloan did a fantastic job getting the crowd motivated and energized during their time here. However, they did a better job showcasing Newmarket as a hotbed for hockey, interviewing many local teams, players and their families throughout the weekend. Juno award winning band, Walk Off The Earth put on great show Sunday evening performing some very creative cover songs and a few hits off their new album including the single "Hold On". Even Coach Rob got into the action on Saturday showing his awesome defensive skills during Paz's juggling act.
However, this weekend it was the Novice AA Redmen who stole the show, returning to action on the ice after more than two week break from league games. The time off didn't appear to affect the team too much with a 3-0 win over Georgina on Saturday evening. Sunday proved a tougher test, with a 3-1 loss to the Stouffville Clippers. Our regular season record now stands at 5 wins and 2 losses.
The next week proves to be quite a test with a game in Markham Waxers on Wednesday followed by a back to back series with our Yonge Street counterparts, Aurora Tigers on Friday and Saturday.
GO REDMEN GO!
