Registration is now open until August 12th, 2024 (Maximum 30 registrants). 

Are you new to, or unfamiliar with hockey? Does your child want to try hockey, but you don’t want to commit to a full season? Is hockey too costly and you’re looking for a cheaper alternative? If you answered yes, then Skate to Success is for you.

WHAT IS SKATE TO SUCCESS?
Skate to Success is a fun and affordable way to TRY hockey. This volunteer-based, pre-hockey program welcomes children new to hockey or unfamiliar with the sport and provides used and donated equipment to help reduce the cost of trying hockey. 

This 8-week program runs 1hr/week starting Sunday October 6th, 2024 and will teach basic skating and individual skills through fun on-ice activities. All players are required to wear full hockey equipment during the sessions.

WHO CAN REGISTER? 
Newmarket residents born between January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2020 can register.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SKATE?

We recommend your child has some experience skating however it is not required. 

HOW MUCH DOES SKATE TO SUCCESS COST?
The registration fee is $60. 

PLEASE NOTE: If your child decides they like hockey, you can register for the NMHA U7 Timbits program following the completion of Skate to Success. The $60 registration fee from Skate to Success will be used as a credit towards a pro-rated U7 registration fee. 

WHATS INCLUDED WITH THE $60 REGISTRATION?

  • 8 on-ice sessions (1hr/week – Sundays at 11am-12pm, Ray Twinney Complex #1)
  • Get Ready for Hockey Information Session (An introduction of the program, review of all required equipment, equipment fitting,  and how to get dressed). 
  • Jersey and hockey socks
  • Free used/donated equipment available (limited quantities and sizes)
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED?
Full hockey equipment is required, including:
  • Helmet with face mask
  • Neck guard
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Hockey pants
  • Shin pads
  • Skates
  • Mouth guard
  • Jersey and hockey socks (included)

IS THE HOCKEY EQUIPMENT INCLUDED?
Our goal for Skate to Success is to offer a fun and affordable program for anyone interested in trying hockey. For this reason, we are working hard to collect new and used equipment to make available for our participants. If you require full or partial equipment, please indicate this on the registration form. We hope to have enough equipment to provide all those in need however this is not guaranteed. 

WHAT DAYS/TIMES/LOCATIONS ARE THE ON-ICE SESSIONS?
  • Get Ready for Hockey Information Session will be held in September (Date/time/location TBD).
  • The eight (8) 1hour on-ice sessions will be held at the Ray Twinney Complex #1 (100 Eagle St W, Newmarket) at 11am on the following dates:
Sunday October 6th, 2024 (First on-ice session)
Sunday October 13th, 2024
Sunday October 20th, 2024
Sunday October 27th, 2024
Sunday November 3rd, 2024
Sunday November 10th, 2024
Sunday November 24th, 2024
Sunday December 1st, 2024 (Final on-ice session)

WHAT IS MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT?
Our program will have a maximum 30 registrant and will have approximately 10 instructors on the ice. 

WHAT IS THE GET READY FOR HOCKEY INFORMATION SESSION?
The Get Ready for Hockey Information Session will be held in September (date/time/location TBD) and will be an introduction to our program. We will introduce our lead instructor(s), review all required equipment, demonstrate how to put on the equipment and answer all questions. We will also have our available equipment on site to provide and fit all players requiring equipment. 

WHAT IF MY CHILD LIKES HOCKEY?
If your child decides they like hockey, you can register for the NMHA U7 Timbits program following the completion of Skate to Success. The $60 registration fee from Skate to Success will be used as a credit towards a pro-rated U7 registration fee.
Once registered for U7, your child will be placed on a team and will begin the U7 program on December 14th, 2024. U7 hockey is held on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the Ray Twinney Complex with some exception dates and will run until March 2025. 

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO COMPLETE SKATE TO SUCCESS PRIOR TO REGISTERING FOR U7?
No. If your child is ready and committed to registering for a full season of hockey, please register for the NMHA U7 Timbits program. Skate to Success is geared towards children new or unfamiliar to hockey that want to try the sport before fully committing.

CAN I MAKE A DONATION TO HELP SUPPORT SKATE TO SUCCESS?

Yes! Skate to Success is a volunteer-based program that is looking for donations to help supply equipment for the participants. We are currently accepting new and gently used hockey equipment for children aged 4-6 years old. If you have any equipment, please contact Joey Wilson at [email protected]

If you are seeking to provide a financial donation please contact Joey Wilson at [email protected] as cheques payable to the Newmarket Minor Hockey Association (re: skate to success) are being accepted. Financial donations will be used to purchase equipment.
