Congratulations to our Minor Atom AA
Redmen who took the York-Simcoe Championship Cup this past weekend! The
boys finally had their chance to hoist a championship trophy! Their hard
work and dedication paid off!
This 2016-17 Minor Atom AA team is a
special group. The boys built a strong bond, which made them successful
on the ice - with a record of only 4 losses (GP28 – W20 – L4 – T4), and silver
medalists in three tournaments.
The playoffs began with a hard fought
series with the Aurora Tigers, who won the regular season series. The
Redmen were down 5 points to 1 point early in the series. They had a
mighty comeback with a few overtime games – including a triple overtime game
that resulted in a 1-1 tie. They took game 6 with a penalty shot in
the last minute of the game and went on to win game 7 to finish the series.
With the Redmen on a high, they faced
the strong Barrie Colts who they have only managed to beat once over the last
two seasons. They fought hard but lost the series 6 points – 4
points. In the next two series, they faced the TNT Tornados and Markham
Waxers and won both 6 points to 2 points. Heading into the finals, they
lost a player to injury, and quite a few to illness as a couple of viruses and
one case of appendicitis whipped through the team.
In the finals they would again face the
Aurora Tigers. The Tigers had the Redmen’s number all year and faced
adversity as they were down a few players. They called up an affiliated
player from the A team to fill the spot who worked hard and did the Redmen
proud. The Redmen won the first two games both with a score of 2-1. The
Tigers faced elimination and came ready to play in game 3. The Redmen
were ready and swept the series in front of a large home crowd with a 2 – 0 win
to take the York-Simcoe Championship Cup!!!
Just when we thought the season was
done, the boys are off to Whitby on April 8th to take on the
winner of the Lakeshore league, the Northumberland Nighthawks.
Congratulations to the players,
parents, and the entire coaching staff on such an amazing season and good luck
in Whitby!
Special thanks to the NMHA executive and staff for all of your support
throughout the season!
